Are you thinking of installing a new gas fireplace in your Stafford, Virginia area home?  Gas fireplaces are a great way to add a welcoming and functional aspect to any room to make it warmer, cozier, and more inviting.  But when it comes to gas fireplace basics, including which type of gas logs will work best for your needs, let our experts guide you through the process so you can make the best decision possible for your family.

This blog will provide you with knowledge about the differences between vented and ventless gas logs, the pros and cons of each, and what you can expect in terms of heat, flame, and functionality of both types.

What is the Difference Between Vented and Ventless Gas Logs?

At Gas Fireplace Service of Stafford, we offer our customers the option of vented and ventless gas logs.  Both options are fully functional and safe to use.  The choice really lies in your preferences, and what you’re looking for in a gas fireplace.

Vented Gas Logs

If you’re looking for the most authentic-looking flames possible, then vented gas logs might be the way to go.  Vented gas logs offer a robust and natural-looking output of flames, and usually come with a bed of embers that mimics the glowing embers of a wood-burning fire.  The vented logs require a functional chimney, and the chimney damper must stay open at all times to allow gas, heat, and byproducts to escape.

Ventless Gas Logs

Ventless logs are another option for your gas fireplace, and this type of log does not require a chimney or other venting.  Ventless logs create a clean, smokeless flame, and they burn at such a high temperature that almost 100% of the fuel is combusted, allowing you to use your gas fireplace without a chimney.  Due to the high burning temperature, the flames from a set of ventless logs will usually appear to be blue and not quite as full-bodied as an authentic flame.

Vented Versus Ventless Gas Fireplaces:  Pros and Cons

Now that we’ve gone over the main differences between vented and ventless gas logs, let’s discuss the pros and cons of each, and how these variables factor into our customers’ decision-making process.

Vented

Pros Due to the lower burning temperature, vented gas logs offer a full, authentic-looking flame.  Vented logs burn more realistically, with a more natural look that is generally considered to be more aesthetically pleasing.

Cons:  Because this type of gas logs requires a chimney for byproducts and heat to escape, vented gas logs are not as energy-efficient as the ventless version.

Ventless

Pros:  The warmer flames produced by ventless gas logs create greater energy efficiency than those of vented logs since they burn hotter and the heat produced doesn’t escape through the chimney.

Cons:  Ventless gas logs burn at a higher temperature to eliminate gas by-products, so the flames themselves will not look as authentic as the lower-temperature flames of vented logs.  Additionally, with ventless gas logs, there’s nowhere except the surrounding room for the water vapor byproducts to escape, which could lead to excess moisture buildup in your home.  Finally, using ventless gas logs could also intensify some existing odors within the home, depending on your home’s indoor air quality.  Most of our customers find that these smells can be greatly reduced by vacuuming the home regularly, avoiding harsh chemicals in the home, or using an air purifier.

As you can see, there are various factors to consider when deciding whether to use vented or ventless gas logs for your gas fireplace.  While both types are safe and effective, your decision should be based on your own unique situation and preferences.  Feel free to reach out to our team of certified professionals to help you determine which would work best for you!
