With this in mind, we’ve come up with some of the most frequently asked questions we receive around general gas fireplace maintenance and usage.

Can I remove the glass from my gas fireplace?

Yes, you are able to remove the glass from your gas fireplace, and it is recommended to do so when you clean it.  In order to remove the glass, please refer to the user guide or installation manual for your specific gas fireplace model.  The way the glass is attached and instructions for removal will vary from model to model.

How do I clean the glass from my fireplace?

Note:  It’s essential to clean your fireplace glass after the initial three hours of burn time.  If this is not completed, it can result in permanent etching of your glass.  Each time you clean your fireplace glass, we recommend the following steps:

  1. Confirm that your fireplace glass is completely cooled before you begin.  We also recommend turning off the gas when cleaning your fireplace glass.
  2. Remove the front face of your fireplace and carefully remove the glass, placing it on a soft surface.
  3. Use a soft cloth and household glass cleaner to wipe both sides of the glass.  Important note: do NOT use any cleaners with ammonia in them!  Also, you should never use abrasive cleaners or cloths, as these could cause scratches and potentially shatter your glass.
  4. If you notice heavier deposits on the glass that are more stubborn to remove, use a hard water deposit glass cleaner for greater effectiveness.
  5. Carefully replace and secure the glass assembly on the fireplace, being sure to follow the instruction manual.

Can I adjust the flame height on my fireplace?

On many gas fireplace units, you have the option to adjust your flame height.  Check the instruction manual for your specific model, or feel free to contact us with questions. Questions about pilot lights? Check out our article about pilot light basics!

How do gas fireplaces vent?

A majority of the gas fireplaces we encounter are direct vent (DV) systems, which simply means that they have a fixed glass front that completely seals the gas burner and combustion firebox off from your home.  With this type of ventilation, all of the combustion occurs outside of your home and then enters the home through a coaxial pipe.  There is also a smaller pipe inside the coaxial pipe that filters out all combustible gasses, which helps to maintain indoor air quality.  Where the vent is placed is determined by your preferences, and could be run horizontally through an exterior wall or vertically through your roof.

Can I reposition my gas logs or use a different log set?

We strongly advise you to avoid repositioning your gas logs or using a different log set in your gas fireplace.  Each gas fireplace is a complex, engineered piece of equipment that encompasses the specific firebox, burner, logs, and venting mechanisms to safely and efficiently produce a cozy fire for your home.  If you change any of the specifications or reposition the logs in any way, this could void your manufacturer’s warranty, and possibly even your homeowner’s warranty.

When it comes to creating a warm and welcoming environment in your home with the use of a gas fireplace, there are important things to remember to keep your system working correctly and safely.  If you are uncertain of any of the above issues or would like to get an expert in the Stafford, VA area to take a look at your system, give Gas Fireplace Service of Stafford a call today!
