FAQs:
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FAQ: Can I take the glass off my gas fireplace?
The glass is removable for cleaning only. You should never remove the glass from your gas fireplace when the fireplace is on or has been in use within the last few hours. Before removing, test the temperature of the glass by holding your hand a few inches away at first to make sure it is not radiating heat. The glass should be cool to the touch before attempting to remove. If you feel unsure about any part of glass removal, give us a call! We’re happy to clean your glass front fireplace for you to take the worry off your shoulders.
Keep in mind:
Do NOT clean the glass with ammonia, this can create hazardous conditions for you, your family, and your pets. Check the ingredient label of all cleaning products to ensure ammonia is not present.
FAQ: My gas logs are old and I want to update them… can I do this myself?
No, the gas logs included in your gas fireplace system were supplied by the manufacturer and removing and replacing them should be handled by an NFI certified professional to ensure they are installed properly and to remove the chance of creating a gas leak in your home.
Keep in mind:
Gas Fireplace Service of Stafford is NFI certified and able to help you select gas log replacements that will suit your unit, your needs, and your style. Don’t DIY when it comes to gas!
FAQ: Can I burn wood or other materials in my gas fireplace?
No, the only thing that should be in your gas fireplace are gas fireplace logs designed specifically for that unit’s setup. Any additional materials placed inside the fireplace box will create a potential fire hazard and threaten the safety of your home and the occupants within it. Only burn gas fuel intended for the unit.
Keep in mind:
S’mores are great but should always be prepared over a wood fire with close adult supervision… do not try to use your gas fireplace as a cooking source.
FAQ: Is the glass on my fireplace hot?
FAQ: How often should I service my Gas or Propane Fireplace?
Gas fireplace service depends on the frequency of use.
We recommend an annual service for regular use and 2 years for rarely used fireplaces.
Keep in mind:
Most manufacturers require an annual service and inspection to ensure the appliance is operating according to specifications.
An annual service will ensure your gas appliance is operating efficiently and provide years of enjoyment.
FAQ: Why does my gas fireplace have a “burning” smell?”
If you have a new gas appliance:
A new gas appliance requires a “Burn Off” period. This consists of burning off any paint, dust or shipping oils off the unit after manufacturing and installation. This could take up to 6 hours of continuous use.
If you have an existing gas appliance:
An existing gas appliance may need a “Burn Off” period due to inactive or infrequent use. This is caused by dust and debris build-up and is a sign your appliance may need to be serviced or repaired. This could take up to 3 hours of continuous use.
FAQ: Why is my fireplace glass black or cloudy?
By-products of using your fireplace collect on the inside of the heat-tempered glass. This generally means your appliance is not operating according to manufacturers specifications.
If you have black soot buildup, your appliance could have venting issues or log mis-placement, potentially allowing dangerous carbon monoxide to enter into living spaces.
Both scenarious require service or repair. Call GFS to schedule an appointment!
